This year, our Facilities Management team has had the privilege of working with multiple students from Suffolk New College as part of their supported internship programme. Some of these students joined us with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) that provide tailored support for their neurodivergent needs, specifically ADHD, Autism, and Microcephaly.
From their first days with us, they brought enthusiasm, commitment, and a genuine desire to grow. Their journeys since have been remarkable. One student, Andrew, has progressed so well that his placement has been extended through to June within our IT department, an achievement that reflects both his capability and growing confidence. Another student, Anna, described her placement as her “dream job,” while a third has now moved on to a new placement, continuing their development and carrying forward the valuable skills gained within our Group.
Their experiences show what can be achieved when young people are given the right support, structure, and opportunities to shine, demonstrating our ongoing commitment to nurturing talent and building a neuroinclusive workplace.
A Journey of Learning and Real‑World Experience
From October 2025 to June 2026, the students contributed, and continue to contribute, across multiple areas of our soft FM operations at both the Ipswich Campus and Friars Bridge Road. Their placements included:
- Courier & Postal Services
- Custodian Services
- Reception
- Catering at The Hold café
- IT Support
- …and other key service areas across our estate
Each department has offered a different learning environment: new routines, new people, and opportunities to build confidence through hands‑on experience.
Support That Unlocks Potential
Lee Johns, Head of FM at Vertas, shared: “Our team has supported the students for several months, helping them grow, develop, and gain valuable skills across the soft FM environment. Their confidence and communication have improved significantly, supported by positive feedback from mentors and programme providers. We’re passionate about nurturing talent, and extremely proud to be part of this scheme as they progress toward future opportunities.”
This support-first, person‑centred approach lies at the heart of Vertas’ commitment to building a neuroinclusive workplace. By adapting tasks, offering clear structure, and providing the space and encouragement to thrive, our FM colleagues have helped unlock skills that were always there, waiting to shine.
Confidence Built Through Contribution
One of the most inspiring developments has been the growth in confidence. With each completed task, every new relationship formed, and each day of increased independence, the students have grown not just in ability, but in self‑belief.
Their mentors report:
- noticeable improvements in communication
- increased willingness to try new tasks
- greater comfort navigating different departments
- a sense of pride and ownership over their work
These milestones matter. They remind us why inclusive opportunities are so powerful.
Sam Reynolds, Job Coach for Supported Internship Learning, at Suffolk New College, said: “I would like to share my sincere thanks and positive feedback regarding the supported internship opportunity provided for Andrew, Matthew, and Anna. This experience will play a vital role in helping them build confidence, gain meaningful work experience, and feel inspired to continue their journey into employment. The impact of this opportunity cannot be overstated. You really do have amazing staff who clearly care and are passionate about supporting young people to succeed. The kindness, encouragement, and support shown will have made a lasting impact, and it is deeply appreciated.”
A Future Full of Possibility
As the programme continues, we hope these students will take the experience gained here, whether into full-time roles within the Vertas Group or onward to future employers across Suffolk. What’s certain is that the skills, confidence, and achievements they’ve built will stay with them.

Anna, one of the students, has said: “This placement has helped me grow so much in confidence, it’s been my dream job. I’ve learned new skills, met really supportive people, and feel proud of what I’ve achieved. Being part of the team has shown me what I’m capable of and made me excited about my future.”
Another student, Andrew, commented: “My placement within the IT team has been a really positive experience so far. The IT Team have been very supportive in helping me learn the system and have all been nice and welcoming. Being part of the team has allowed me to develop my technical knowledge, gain practical experience, and build confidence working in a professional IT environment. It has been a great opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues while contributing to the team, and it has helped me better understand the different aspects of working in IT and how it can support my future career.”
We’re grateful for their contributions, the perspectives they’ve shared, and the reminder that when workplaces remove barriers and embrace diverse talent, everyone benefits.
