Building a Lasting Career: Sarah Hunt’s 18-Year Journey with Vertas Group

This National Careers Week, Vertas Group is proud to celebrate those who have built lasting careers with the company.

Amongst those inspiring stories is Verse FM’s (part of Vertas Group) Operations Manager, Sarah Hunt. Having been with the company for 18 years, Sarah has progressed across multiple roles, gaining a wealth of experience and making an immeasurable impact during her time in service.

Whether supporting colleagues through difficult times, mentoring other team members, or being shortlisted for the Making the Difference Awards, Sarah embodies what makes Vertas Group such a special place to grow a career.

During our conversation, one message stood out, you’re as good as the people around you. With that in mind, we’re proud to share Sarah’s story, which is a testament to teamwork, and the opportunities available at Vertas Group.

Can you tell us about your role and the impact of your work within Vertas?

As Operations Manager, I oversee a range of essential services, including catering, cleaning, FM, the post room and the print room, all within Verse FM.

I’m incredibly fortunate to be supported by a team of 75 amazing colleagues across multiple sites. My role is to ensure smooth operations while creating a collaborative culture. With the team’s support, we’ve strengthened Verse FM’s reputation with clients and the wider Group. This has proven to me what’s possible when we work together for the same cause.

What has your career journey been like since joining, and how has your role evolved?

My role has evolved a lot since I started in 2007 as a Head of Kitchen. In 2012, I secured a secondment as a catering trainer, which expanded my focus to cleaning and caretaking. I then became a Learning and Development advisor for the Group in January 2015, before stepping into my current role in 2020. And, nearly five years on, I still love the variety, and the rewards of the role.

No two days are the same! Despite everyday stresses, as with all jobs, I am supported both at home and by my colleagues.

How has the company supported your growth and development, and were there any key moments that shaped your career?

Throughout my time at Verse FM, from development courses to mentoring, the opportunities have helped shape my career. My secondment to catering training was significant and was made special by my supportive colleagues, many of whom I’m still friends with.

I also gained valuable skills through completing a leadership apprenticeship with West Suffolk College and ILM accreditation. However, it was stepping up during COVID that I truly learnt how to lead and be the manager my team needs. The more I grow, the better I can support my team.

Looking back on your time here, what achievements are you most proud of?

I’m incredibly proud of the reputation I’ve built across the Group and of how our services are recognised at all levels. I’m also so proud to have been shortlisted as Inspiring Leader at the Making the Difference Awards. But, my greatest achievement has been mentoring Vaida, our Operations Assistant, and watching her grow into a confident and capable leader.

What advice would you give to colleagues who are looking to build a long and fulfilling career within Vertas?

There are so many opportunities, you can grow in any service area or support function if you’re passionate about it. The world really is your oyster!

But don’t forget, life is short, so make every moment count, both at work and at home. I am who I am today because of the support of my incredible family and friends.
