Sandlings Primary School – Landscaping Case Study

We visited the school with a view to revamp the old and tired early years outdoor space.

We visited the school with a view to revamp the old and tired early years outdoor space. The Headteacher was inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach, which focuses on building a learning environment based on the interests of the children, which we looked to develop within the project.

Objectives

  • To create a ‘natural’ play area with stone trails, sand pits, a mud kitchen and ‘cosy zones’
  • To design and implement the project on a tight budget
  • To work with the school to build a design based on the Reggio Emilia approach.

Solution

  • Due to the limited budget, we helped the school to gain funding for the project and supplied artificial grass left over from previous projects
  • We removed the existing raised beds, reused the soil in new planting areas, kept and tidied up the shed and play house
  • We sourced wood rounds and tree slices from a local wood yard and used local contractors to support the development.

Benefits

We worked closely with local suppliers to create natural learning environments within our project based on the Reggio Emilia approach. We were pleased to support the school with funding and free artificial turf meaning that their dreams for the early years area became reality.

“The new early years area far exceeded our brief. It was more than we could have hoped for.” – Headteacher at Sandlings Primary School
