Building an Inclusive Culture: Inside and Outside the Workplace

Submitted by Kim Sale | 03/12/2025

As we mark International Day of Persons with Disabilities, it’s an opportunity to reflect on how we can create environments where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered. Inclusivity isn’t just a policy, it’s a mindset that shapes how we work, interact, and contribute to society.

Last year, we heard from Kim Sale, Marketing and Content Executive at Vertas Group, as she shared her personal journey and highlighted why inclusivity matters. This year, Kim is going beyond the conversation to focus on action and explore the ways we can all contribute to building an inclusive and welcoming workplace and community.

Why Inclusivity Matters – A Message from Vertas Group

At Vertas Group, we believe that diversity drives innovation and strengthens our teams. An inclusive culture ensures that every individual, regardless of background, has equal opportunities to thrive. It’s about recognising differences, removing barriers, and creating an environment where everyone can contribute their best.

We are proud to hold Bronze on the Inclusive Employers Standard accreditation. This achievement reflects our commitment to embedding inclusion into our culture and practices. This accreditation is a milestone, but it’s also a starting point. We will continue to build on this foundation.

Practical Steps Inside the Workplace:

By Kim Sale, Marketing and Content Executive at Vertas Group.

Creating an inclusive workplace is a shared responsibility and it starts by embedding these principles into our everyday actions. Here are some practical steps we can all take:

Listen and Learn

Actively seek out diverse perspectives and experiences. Inclusivity starts with understanding, so take time to listen and learn from colleagues.

Challenge Assumptions

Be aware of unconscious bias and work to overcome them. Avoid stereotypes and recognise that disabilities can be visible or invisible, so be mindful that not all challenges are apparent.

Use Inclusive Language

Language matters. Choose words that respect individuality and avoid terms that may exclude or marginalise.

Make Accessibility a Priority

Whether it’s tools, meetings, or digital platforms, ensure accessibility is considered from the start. Small changes, like providing captions or accessible seating, can have a big impact.

Celebrate Differences

Recognise and value the unique contributions of every team member. Diversity benefits the workforce in many ways, such as strengthening creativity and problem-solving to more effective decision-making and fresh approaches.

Be an Ally

Support colleagues by advocating for inclusion and challenging behaviours or practices that create barriers.

Beyond the Workplace

Inclusivity doesn’t stop at work, it extends to how we engage with communities and daily interactions. When we carry these values into our communities, we help create a society that celebrates diversity and ensures everyone feels welcome.
