Submitted by Connie Maddock | 31/03/2025

Vertas Group is proud to celebrate the incredible individuals who have built lasting careers within the company.

Shaun Swan, now Business Development Manager, has been with Vertas Group for an incredible 31 years. Throughout this time, he has honed his expertise while making a lasting impact.

Beyond his skills and experience, what truly stands out is Shaun’s passion. When talking to him, it’s impossible not to feel motivated by his dedication. He’s committed to growth, not just his own but championing opportunities like apprenticeships to nurture future leaders.

His belief in making a positive impact through sustainable practices is felt across every aspect of his work within Grounds. People like Shaun bring Vertas Group’s mission to life, and we’re proud to share his story as a reminder of the lasting careers available here.

What has your career journey been like since joining, and how has your role evolved?

I started my career as a Groundsman, maintaining sites on the mobile units. Over time, I progressed to Ground Chargehand, overseeing around 21 sites, before stepping into a Client Officer role.

From there, I became an Operations Manager, gaining insight and leadership experience through company-supported training, including an NVQ Level 4. I then advanced to Regional Manager, overseeing multiple areas, before taking the big step to Head of Service, something I achieved with the support of my team.

How has your passion for your work influenced your team?

I believe if you’re passionate about what you do, this passion rubs off on others. When you love what you do, it inspires those around you. I love doing the job and I think that energy spreads across the team.

We’re like one big family, supporting each other every step of the way. I couldn’t have done my role without the fantastic team around me. It’s not just about business, it’s about creating a culture where everyone feels they can do their best.

Sustainability has been a big part of your role. Tell us how this has influenced your day-to-day work.

So, all our green waste is fully recycled, and we’ve introduced initiatives like shredding waste for use in school borders to aid weed control.

Grounds maintenance is more than just cutting grass, it involves hundreds of varied tasks, each with an environmental

focus. We also prioritise using local suppliers for materials, reducing travel and supporting our communities.

Looking back on your time here, what achievements

are you most proud of?

I’m proud to leave behind a legacy of continuous improvement and reducing our environmental impact. Over the years, I’ve introduced battery-powered equipment to reduce emissions, championed biodiversity projects, and planted thousands of trees, many alongside students, to create lasting green spaces.

Introducing apprenticeships has also been incredibly rewarding. Of the six or seven we’ve had, five have stayed on, with some even progressing to Chargehands.

What three tips would you give your colleagues for a long-term career at Vertas?

First, believe in yourself and what you want to achieve. Second, set clear goals, you need something to achieve and try to extend these goals all the time. Finally, love and enjoy what you do! This is when your passion comes out. When you enjoy your work, others are inspired to work with you and share in your success.
