Sudbury Primary School Produces Bake Off Winner

A food service assistant from St Gregory CEVC Primary School in Sudbury has beaten off stiff competition from fellow Vertas staff to be crowned winner of the Vertas Bake Off 2018.

With a stunning Chocolate Ganache Sponge, Carla Graham, dashed the hopes of the ten other contestants as she seized victory.

This was the second year that Vertas has run a Bake Off competition.

This time it was kindly sponsored by ice cream supplier Beechdean, Vertas’ client Suffolk One in Ipswich, which opened its large well-equipped kitchen for competitors to bake in, and Marriage’s The Master Millers.

Carla’s prize of £400 high street vouchers (from Beechdean) and a ‘wild card’ invitation to the black tie ceremony at the Making the Difference Staff Awards at Milsoms went down a treat. Runners up were treated to a goodie bag containing flour from Marriage’s – perfect for that evening’s Shrove Tuesday pancake making.

Both the winning cake and those of the finalists were sold off the next day at Vertas head office Beacon House for the company’s charity of the year Cancer Research UK, raising £49.50.

The school tweeted their congratulations to Miss Graham:

“Huge congratulations to Miss Graham from our school kitchen who won Vertas’s Great British Bake Off – how lucky we are at St Greg’s to eat food prepared by award-winning cooks each day! #TeamStGregs.”

Ian Surtees, Vertas Group Limited’s CEO, said:

“The standard of the baking was to be commended, as was the professionalism and determination of the contestants as they took on the challenge. As I would have expected, health and safety was the top priority as each cook adapted to a new kitchen environment. It made me proud to have these team members within the Vertas Group, many of whom work incredibly hard catering for children across the region day in, day out.

“Thank you to judges Keith Buet (Group Operations Director), Caroline Thompson-Barr (Head of Operations), the business development services team for running the competition and all entrants for being such good sports.”
