Honouring Armed Forces Week: Neil’s Story

At Vertas Group, we’re proud to recognise and honour the incredible service and sacrifices made by our Armed Forces.

This Armed Forces Week, we sat down with ex-armed forces Neil Bate-Jones, Head of Services at Vertas Nottinghamshire Limited. Neil began his career in the British Army as an apprentice soldier, going on to serve as a Chef within the Royal Logistic Corps, serving around the world, and completing numerous operational tours before leaving in 2015 after reaching the rank of Warrant Officer Class One.

Here, Neil shares his journey from military to civilian life, reflecting on his experiences, the challenges of transition, and the support he’s received since joining Vertas Group.

What was the biggest challenge transitioning from military to civilian work?

The biggest challenge I faced when transitioning from military to civilian employment was the sense of loss, particularly the camaraderie and strong sense of togetherness that defined much of my military life. Adjusting to a different environment without that close-knit support network was difficult, especially during the early stages of settling into civilian life and my first role.

What skills from the military do you use on a day-to-day basis in your role now?

One of the key skills I use in my current role is organisation. The military helped me develop a strong, structured approach to managing tasks, using resources effectively, and staying focused on achieving successful outcomes.

Alongside this, teamwork and adaptability play a big part in my day-to-day work. Being able to work closely with colleagues, respond to changing priorities, and remain calm under pressure are also all skills I developed during my time in the military.

What support has made the biggest difference at Vertas Group?

What does Armed Forces Week mean to you?

Armed Forces Week holds great significance for me. It provides an important opportunity to come together and recognise, celebrate and support both current and former members of the Armed Forces. It’s a time to acknowledge their dedication, their service, and the sacrifices they have made.
